A building collapse in New Delhi's Satya Niketan neighborhood has resulted in at least six deaths. The five-story structure, which served as a boys' paying guest accommodation, collapsed on Sunday around 1:30 PM while repair work was reportedly underway in its basement. Rescue operations, involving teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi Fire Service, and Delhi Police, continued into Monday to clear debris and search for any remaining trapped individuals. Ten people were rescued from the rubble, with several reported to be in critical condition, while at least five were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital and another succumbed to injuries during treatment.
The incident has sparked questions about building safety, particularly in densely populated areas with private student accommodations. Former Delhi chief secretary Omesh Saigal highlighted concerns about unauthorized construction, unapproved blueprints, additional floors, or substandard construction in parts of Delhi. He also called for restrictions on new construction in overcrowded areas. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has since ordered the immediate sealing of all illegal constructions exceeding four floors and stated that officials found responsible for allowing such structures will face stringent action.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the collapse and directed that an FIR be registered against the building owner. Police have identified the alleged owner as Hariram. Student groups, including ABVP, protested against the MCD, demanding the commissioner's resignation and an impartial probe into the incident, along with safety audits of all paying guest accommodations in Delhi. NSUI President Vinod Jakhar criticized the delayed response of medical and emergency services, suggesting that more lives could have been saved if resources had arrived promptly. The narrow lanes around the site also hampered rescue efforts, making it difficult to bring specialized equipment closer to the collapsed structure.
