An Amazon Prime Air cargo plane, operated by 21 Air as Flight 7598, overran a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Boeing 767-300 aircraft subsequently caught fire and struck multiple vehicles on the ground, leading to the deaths of at least five individuals and injuries to five others, three of whom are in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT) and caused the immediate closure of all runways and taxiways at Miami International Airport, prompting warnings of significant flight delays and cancellations from U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported that 60 units responded to the scene, where a fuel leak from the plane was also being contained. The aircraft came to a stop in a field after crossing a perimeter road and Northwest 67th Avenue, which was subsequently closed to traffic.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel stated that the company is gathering details and is working closely with local authorities, prioritizing the safety and well-being of everyone involved. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed it would investigate the crash, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also gathering information. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava indicated that the focus is on the individuals involved and supporting first responders.
