German startup Isar Aerospace successfully launched its 28-meter-long Spectrum rocket into orbit from the Andøya spaceport in Arctic Norway at 10:12 p.m. local time on Saturday. This historic event marks the first time a privately developed rocket has reached orbit from continental Europe, positioning Isar Aerospace as a significant competitor to Elon Musk's SpaceX and a key player in Europe's push for autonomous access to space. The uncrewed rocket successfully deployed five satellites into orbit, reaching an altitude of 100 kilometers in under four minutes. This achievement is a major milestone for the European launch industry, which has struggled to independently send satellites into space since cutting ties with Russia's Soyuz rockets and has largely relied on U.S.-based SpaceX.

The launch comes after a previous test flight in 2025 where Isar's rocket plunged into the sea shortly after takeoff. This time, the mission, dubbed "Onward and Upward," included six commercial and educational CubeSats and an experimental mission, demonstrating the Spectrum's capability to carry customer payloads and validate critical systems. Isar Aerospace aims to produce up to 40 launch vehicles per year and is developing a second launch site in Canada. The company secured a $230 million contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) in August, part of the European Launcher Challenge which encourages competition among European launch providers. This funding is intended to accelerate development and expand infrastructure, reinforcing Europe's goal to reduce its reliance on foreign launch services.

Europe's renewed focus on independent space access is driven by geopolitical concerns and a desire to boost its technological sovereignty. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Norway's Minister of Trade and Industry, Cecilie Myrseth, highlighted the importance of this launch for Europe's strategic autonomy. German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has also announced a $35 billion drive by 2030 to build out space capacity. Isar Aerospace, founded eight years ago, was also awarded the EIC Horizon Prize for Low Cost Space Launch in 2022, accompanied by $10 million in funding from the European Commission, further supporting its role in developing a competitive European launcher ecosystem. Other European initiatives include spaceports in Sweden and the UK, all aiming to provide greater autonomy in space flights.
