A new study by the University of Oxford's Ineos Oxford Institute for Antimicrobial Research has revealed that industrial poultry farming significantly contributes to the proliferation of *Campylobacter*, the most common bacterial cause of diarrhea globally. The research indicates a more than 100-fold increase in the movement of *Campylobacter* strains between wild birds and chickens due to intensive farming practices. These large, densely populated chicken flocks act as "pathogen sponges," absorbing and amplifying diverse bacterial strains from multiple sources, which then mix and evolve rapidly.

This intensification of farming creates ideal conditions for bacteria to acquire new traits, including increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR), making infections harder to treat. *Campylobacter* causes over 3.5 times as many gastroenteritis cases in the UK annually as all other monitored foodborne bacteria combined. Cases are on the rise, with the UK seeing an increase from 60,055 cases in 2023 to 70,352 in 2024. In the U.S., an estimated 1.5 million people fall ill each year, while Australia reported about 40,000 infections in 2024.

While the findings are not cause for public panic, as good kitchen hygiene can significantly reduce risks, they serve as a critical reminder that intensive livestock production not only boosts food output but also creates opportunities for pathogens to evolve and spread. Experts, such as Professor Sam Sheppard of the University of Oxford, emphasize that the poultry industry's success in curbing *Salmonella* through vaccination and biosecurity efforts could serve as a model for tackling *Campylobacter*. He suggests aiming for enhanced farm biosecurity to go beyond merely managing contamination to proactively address the issue.
