President Donald Trump has reiterated his call for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, despite a robust August jobs report. In a post on Truth Social, Trump told the Fed board to "BE PATRIOTS for a change," emphasizing his desire for reduced rates to benefit the economy. This push comes as the US saw a significant increase of 162,000 nonfarm payrolls in August, surpassing all analyst estimates, with the unemployment rate holding steady at 4.1%.
The strong jobs data initially stoked bets on a potential September Fed rate hike. However, analysts, including BlackRock's Rosenberg, suggest that risk assets are capable of withstanding such a hike. The Fed's rate decision this month is largely anticipated to hinge on upcoming inflation data, despite the positive labor market indicators.
Adding to the administration's stance, Vice President JD Vance has also publicly stated that he believes it is "proper and responsible" for the Fed to lower interest rates. Vance indicated that the administration views lower rates as a means to make home ownership more affordable for Americans. Trump went further, threatening to cease trading with nations with which the US has a trade deficit if the Federal Reserve does not lower rates, citing a Supreme Court decision that he claims grants him the authority to do so.
