Aptera Motors, a solar mobility company, has announced a strategic partnership with Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology Co., Ltd. (Launch Design), a Chinese design-for-manufacturing firm. This collaboration involves a production program valued at up to approximately $44 million (RMB 300 million), with the goal of building Aptera's first 40 production vehicles, targeting a start in the fourth quarter of 2026. The partnership covers assembly fixtures, tooling, vehicle testing, pilot production, and high-volume production work.
This partnership is expected to significantly benefit Aptera by leveraging Launch Design's extensive international supplier network, which includes over 3,000 employees and experience with more than 400 vehicle models. This access to a global supply chain is anticipated to provide Aptera with parts and tooling at more competitive costs, potentially reducing the projected bill of materials. Furthermore, Launch's ability to deliver finished subassemblies directly to Aptera's California assembly facility is aimed at simplifying final assembly and shortening the path to high-volume production.
The financial structure of the agreement is designed to conserve Aptera's cash. Aptera will pay two-thirds of approved program costs in cash, while Launch Design will accept warrants to purchase Aptera stock for the remaining one-third, representing up to approximately $15 million. This arrangement aligns Launch's financial interests with Aptera's success. Aptera plans to fund its cash portion through existing capital, previously announced financing, and potential future debt or equity financing. The first bodies and chassis for these production vehicles are expected to arrive in October 2026, with these vehicles intended for customer deliveries.
