Smart glasses, once derided with Google Glass and its "glasshole" wearers in 2013-2015, are experiencing a resurgence, largely driven by Meta's partnership with Ray-Ban maker EssilorLuxottica. Meta's approach has focused on integrating technology seamlessly into a popular fashion accessory, making the devices more accessible and affordable, starting at $299 compared to Google Glass's $1,500. This strategy has proven highly successful, with Meta selling seven million pairs in 2025 alone, tripling sales from the previous two years combined, and accounting for 69% of the smart glasses market in early 2026. The overall market for smart glasses without displays saw a 167% year-on-year increase in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 2.25 million units globally.
Despite the commercial success and efforts to normalize smart glasses as fashion items, significant privacy concerns persist and are even intensifying. The core issue revolves around the ability of these camera-equipped glasses to covertly record individuals, leading to a new wave of public backlash. A BBC investigation uncovered hundreds of videos of women filmed without consent in public spaces, while a Swedish newspaper reported on Kenyan subcontractors reviewing sensitive footage, including nudity, inadvertently captured by Meta's AI glasses. Lawsuits have been filed against Meta and Luxottica in the U.S. alleging inadequate disclosure regarding data transmission and human review of footage.
Public perception has quickly turned negative, with Meta's devices being dubbed "pervert glasses," and calls for bans have led to their prohibition in judicial buildings in England and Wales, as well as in over 800 Wetherspoons establishments in the UK. Researchers from the University of Sydney found that over half of covert point-of-view videos on Instagram showed potential harassment, warning of new forms of online harassment and gender-based harms due to wearable cameras. Instagram has responded by cracking down on such content, with its head, Adam Mosseri, stating that accounts exploiting people will be removed.
While proponents argue for the convenience and potential assistive uses of smart glasses, critics emphasize that the benefits primarily accrue to the wearer, while the privacy costs are externalized to the public.
