Elon Musk’s tunneling startup, The Boring Company, is in discussions to raise $4 billion in a new funding round, which would value the company at approximately $20 billion. This valuation marks a significant increase from its $5.7 billion valuation in 2022. The company is reportedly making unusual demands of potential investors, requiring them to provide recruiting and business help as a condition for participation in this latest funding round.

The Boring Company, which spun out of SpaceX in 2018, aims to develop tunneling technology for high-speed transportation systems. Its most prominent project is the Vegas Loop in Las Vegas, Nevada, which started transporting passengers in 2021 and has served over 3 million passengers across its eight stations. The company plans to expand the Vegas Loop to include Harry Reid International Airport, expecting to increase annual ridership from around 1 million to between 5 million and 10 million.

Despite its ambitious plans and growth, The Boring Company has faced some challenges. Nevada regulators issued a cease-and-desist letter in September 2025, alleging nearly 100 violations of a previous settlement and 689 missed inspections related to environmental regulations, although the company disputes these claims. Beyond Las Vegas, The Boring Company has announced projects for tunnel networks in Nashville, Tennessee, and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and has also pitched projects in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles.

The substantial increase in valuation for The Boring Company, nearly fourfold since 2022, highlights investor interest in Musk's ventures. However, this funding round's unique requirement for investor assistance in recruiting and business development suggests the company is looking for more than just capital, aiming to leverage its backers' expertise and networks to accelerate its growth and address operational needs.
