A Ukrainian unmanned surface vessel (USV) struck the Russian Nefrit supply ship near a pier in the port of Sochi on September 3. The incident was reported by the OSINT channel Exilenova+. Footage of the explosion and aftermath has emerged online. The Nefrit is described as a multipurpose supply vessel designed to support offshore oil and gas operations and sailed under the Russian flag.
The vessel had been operating in the Novorossiysk area and the Black Sea, suggesting its potential role in servicing critical energy infrastructure. The strike occurred during a broader Ukrainian USV attack on the port of Sochi, with reports indicating multiple explosions in the vicinity. A Russian Pantsir SPAAGM air defense system was reportedly sighted near one of the strike locations.
This attack follows a series of Ukrainian strikes against Russian oil infrastructure and maritime assets. In July, Ukraine escalated its attacks across Russia’s oil supply chain, targeting large refineries, oil tankers, and sea and pipeline infrastructure. There were at least 30 strikes in July, the second-highest monthly number since Russia's full-scale invasion, not including other unclaimed incidents.
Ukraine's military strategy aims to degrade Moscow's wartime economic capacity by increasing the "lethality" of Russia's losses through asymmetric approaches and advanced technologies.
