Ford is secretly developing a new electric pickup truck, codenamed 'Project T3,' with an ambitious goal of launching in 2027 at a price point of around $30,000, comparable to a Toyota Camry. This new vehicle aims to be nearly as fast as a Mustang and have a range of approximately 300 miles on a single charge, incorporating advanced in-car technology to compete with Tesla and Chinese manufacturers. The project represents a radical departure from Ford's traditional manufacturing practices, focusing on simplicity, fewer parts, and a more aerodynamic design to achieve cost efficiencies.
To meet its targets, Ford is rethinking its assembly line, moving towards a modular system that involves stamping out large aluminum castings and a battery, then merging them at the final stage, a method similar to Tesla and Chinese EV makers. This approach aims to reduce the number of parts by thousands and eliminate extensive copper wiring. The company has already invested approximately $5 billion into the development of this new line of affordable EVs, including the midsize pickup, and plans to invest nearly $2 billion in its Louisville, Kentucky, plant for assembly, retaining at least 2,200 jobs.
Ford's past electric models, like the F-150 Lightning, experienced substantial losses and high price points (starting at almost $60,000 before discontinuation). With Project T3, Ford seeks to avoid these pitfalls by drastically cutting production costs and aiming for high sales volumes, with a target of 100,000 units in the first year of production. The company claims the new truck will use 20% fewer parts and be 15% more aerodynamic than its other pickups. Analysts express skepticism about Ford's ability to achieve these goals, especially given the cooling U.S. EV market and the competitive advantages of Chinese manufacturers, which include extensive government backing and lower labor costs.
Despite the challenges, Ford CEO Jim Farley refers to this initiative as a new 'Model T moment,' emphasizing the need to dismantle decades of engineering inertia. The company has tested about 30 hand-built prototypes and plans to start building and road-testing factory-built models later this year. The interior of the new truck is expected to be roomier than a compact crossover SUV, and Ford projects a lower five-year ownership cost compared to a three-year-old used Tesla Model Y. Hyundai Motor CEO José Muñoz has expressed doubt that any automaker can compete with Chinese EVs in the U.S. without government subsidies.
