Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, rapidly grew to approximately $45 billion in assets by early July 2026. The fund employed leverage as high as 400% and made concentrated bets on companies in the AI supply chain, such as SK Hynix, CoreWeave, SanDisk, and Micron. This strategy initially led to an impressive 439% net return through June 2026, attracting significant institutional investors like Jane Street and Stripe.
The fund's downfall occurred swiftly in July when a sharp reversal in semiconductor and AI infrastructure stocks triggered margin calls from its prime brokers. To meet these demands, Situational Awareness was forced to sell its entire public equity portfolio to Ken Griffin's Citadel at an estimated 10 cents on the dollar. This fire sale caused the fund's holdings to plummet to around $10 billion by the end of July, representing a 67% loss for the month. The collapse highlighted the risks of high leverage and concentrated thematic bets.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has since launched an investigation into the near-collapse, subpoenaing major banks including Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Bank of America. The SEC is examining trade timing, margin calls, and communications between the fund and its lenders. While the investigation does not allege wrongdoing, it marks the first formal inquiry into a leverage blow-up of this scale involving an AI-themed fund. The incident also impacted investors like Jane Street, which recorded a $15 billion loss in July.
Despite the liquidation of its public equities, Situational Awareness retained its private company investments, including a significant stake in AI giant Anthropic, estimated to be around $5 billion. Citadel, after acquiring the distressed assets, has since offloaded about 80% of the risk, and the original holdings have partially recovered, prompting questions about the necessity of the forced liquidation. The broader market, however, remained largely unaffected, with the S&P 500 staying near record highs during the episode, illustrating how concentrated losses can occur without impacting the overall index.
