Electric vehicle (EV) batteries are demonstrating significantly longer lifespans and better performance than initially predicted by the automotive industry. Recent real-world data indicates that, on average, EVs retain up to 95 percent of their original range after five years of use. This is a considerable improvement over earlier forecasts and helps alleviate consumer anxiety regarding battery degradation. Studies show that modern EV batteries degrade at an average rate of 2.3 percent per year, suggesting a potential lifespan of 20 years or more.

Battery replacement rates have also drastically decreased. For EVs manufactured between 2011 and 2016, approximately one in twelve required a battery replacement. However, for vehicles built from 2022 onwards, this rate has plummeted to a mere 0.3 percent, according to a 2025 study by Recurrent. This dramatic reduction in failure risk is a key factor in improving the perceived reliability and total cost of ownership for modern EVs.

Further reinforcing these findings, a Swedish study of nearly 10,000 EV battery health tests, conducted between 2022 and 2026 by online car marketplace Carla using AVILOO diagnostic tools, revealed strong performance across various models. The Kia e-Niro, with its 64 kWh battery, topped the ranking, retaining an impressive 97.25 percent of its original capacity after 62,000 miles. Other strong performers included the Hyundai Kona Electric (97.18 percent) and the Kia EV6 (95.95 percent). Even the lowest-ranked model among the top 20, the Volkswagen ID.3, retained 91.79 percent capacity after 62,000 miles.

Technological advancements, including improved battery management systems and the increasing use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery chemistry, contribute to this enhanced durability. The study also highlighted the importance of battery technology, with CATL LFP batteries retaining 93.3 percent of capacity compared to 91.5 percent for LG Chem and lower percentages for some Panasonic batteries after 62,000 miles. While out-of-warranty replacements can still be costly, ranging from $5,000 to $16,000, manufacturers are increasingly designing battery packs for repairability, allowing individual modules to be replaced rather than the entire unit, thereby reducing potential repair costs. This increased longevity and reliability are expected to positively impact used EV resale values and lease-return economics.

Battery prices have also seen a significant decline, falling more than 90 percent since 2010, according to a BloombergNEF report. While frequent fast charging can accelerate degradation, consistent software updates and advanced battery management systems are helping to mitigate early capacity loss. The overall trend indicates that the initial concerns about EV battery longevity are largely unfounded for modern vehicles, leading to more favorable long-term ownership prospects.
