Google is making a concerted effort to close the gap in the AI coding tools market, where it has lagged behind rivals like Anthropic PBC and OpenAI. Internally, there has been anxiety at Google, particularly within its AI lab DeepMind, about falling behind in offering effective and popular AI coding tools to businesses. The company's Gemini model's capabilities were previously dispersed across multiple products, hindering a clear solution for businesses.

To address this, Google is unifying some of its coding initiatives under one banner, Antigravity, a platform released last year following a $2.4 billion acquisition of Windsurf's technology and talent. Google CEO Sundar Pichai acknowledged that the company was "a bit behind at this moment" in agentic coding, instruction following, and long-horizon tasks. However, Google aims to lure developers by offering a more affordable option, including an AI developer subscription tier at $100 per month, as the market for AI code tools is projected to grow 26% annually, from $9.3 billion this year to approximately $30 billion by 2031.

Google recently introduced Gemini 3.7 Flash, its latest and most intelligent workhorse model, specifically designed for coding and agents. This model shows substantial improvements over its predecessor, Gemini 3.6 Flash, in tasks like debugging, issue resolution, and generating production-ready code. For instance, it achieved higher first-pass code accuracy in FrontierCode 1.1 Main (43.6% vs. 34.4%) and DeepSWE v1.1 (65.3% vs. 49.0%). It also demonstrates enhanced reasoning and accuracy in knowledge-dense fields, outperforming 3.6 Flash on the GDP.pdf benchmark (34.0% vs. 22.0%) and AutomationBench (30.4% vs. 17.0%).

Gemini 3.7 Flash also provides a noticeably improved developer experience, adapting better to roadblocks, clarifying intent, and following instructions with greater fidelity through more diligent multi-step planning and tool calls. Google is offering 3.7 Flash at an introductory price of $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens through the end of the year, which is half the cost of the original 3.6 Flash. This aggressive pricing, combined with enhanced performance, is intended to enable developers to scale production-ready agents cost-effectively and increase Google's market share in the rapidly evolving AI coding landscape.
