Villanova University has seen a dramatic increase in its public profile due to two major events involving its alumni: the election of Pope Leo XIV (an Augustinian friar and Villanova graduate) in May 2025, and the New York Knicks' NBA championship win in June, featuring three key players who were former Villanova teammates. The papal election led to 1.1 million unique website visitors on the day of his election, compared to a typical 65,000, and a 10% increase in applications for the Fall 2026 class, reaching 28,515, the largest in the university's history at the time. This phenomenon has been internally referred to as the "Pope Leo effect."
Just over a year after the papal election, Villanova was back in the spotlight when Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Mikal Bridges — all members of Villanova's 2016 NCAA national championship team (and Brunson and Bridges also on the 2018 team) — led the New York Knicks to their first NBA title in over 50 years. This unprecedented reunion of college teammates on a professional championship-winning team garnered significant media attention, with Game 5 of the NBA Finals alone drawing nearly 25 million viewers and Villanova frequently mentioned in broadcast coverage. Jonathan Gust, the university's assistant vice president of communication, highlighted the unparalleled visibility generated by these events, stating, "You can't pay for that kind of visibility."
This heightened visibility aligns with Villanova's strategic growth, as the university recently opened its new 112-acre Cabrini Campus in Radnor following a two-year, $100 million renovation. The expansion, which officially became part of Villanova in June 2024, is designed to house 900 sophomore students and increase overall enrollment by approximately 250 new students annually over the next four years, pushing the total enrollment from 7,000 to 8,000. The new campus includes nearly 30 classrooms, dedicated nursing simulation spaces, and state-of-the-art research laboratories, enhancing the university's academic offerings and supporting its Augustinian mission.
