Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's former defense minister, is embarking on several new initiatives following his dismissal from government. His primary focus will be establishing a venture fund designed to attract Western funding for Ukrainian defense technology startups. Fedorov outlined key investment priorities for this fund, including the development of "cheap AI-powered missiles," the widespread implementation of robotics along the line of contact, and the deployment of advanced sensors to detect enemy movements. He envisions a future where robots and drones precede assault troops into enemy-held territory, reducing infantry exposure and saturating the battlefield with smart sensors for immediate reconnaissance and destruction.
In addition to the venture fund, Fedorov plans to create a think tank aimed at developing strategies to end the war and defeat Russia. This organization will be comprised of policymakers and analysts tasked with generating ideas and proposing actionable plans to the government for the conflict's subsequent stages. He emphasized the importance of AI-related startups within this framework, seeing them as crucial for defense tech and the war effort. Fedorov is confident that global talent will join these projects to support Ukraine.
Beyond these endeavors, Fedorov intends to engage in civic activities focused on preparing Ukraine for a return to democracy and will also lecture at universities on reforms. He previously introduced a plan to the Defense Ministry called "Air-Land-Economy," which prioritized protecting Ukrainian airspace, halting Russian advances, and economically exhausting Russia. Fedorov views his current projects as a continuation of this work in the private sector, leveraging his extensive team and social capital to achieve results. He is also helping foundations prepare partner investment and funding for governmental changes, assisting the government in adapting its strategy. He has also accepted a voluntary, non-staff advisory role with Italy's Ministry of Defense to assist with defense innovation and modernization.
