NASA successfully launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday from Kennedy Space Center using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The $4.3 billion mission, named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, is expected to revolutionize our understanding of the universe by studying dark energy, dark matter, and searching for thousands of new planets outside our solar system. The telescope is set to reach its observation point 1 million miles away, near the Webb Space Telescope, in over three months.

The Roman Space Telescope's capabilities are significantly more advanced than its predecessors. It is designed to survey the cosmos with a field of view 100 times larger and 1,000 times faster than the Hubble Space Telescope, collecting as much data in one month as Hubble did in a century. Over its five-year primary mission, it is projected to downlink an astounding 2,500 terabytes of data, compared to Hubble's 172 terabytes over 30 years.

Key objectives include mapping billions of galaxies to understand dark energy, which causes the universe's accelerated expansion, and observing the gravitational effects of dark matter, the invisible substance making up most of the universe's mass. Additionally, Roman is expected to discover over 100,000 exoplanets, including Jupiter-sized planets orbiting Earth-like stars, utilizing techniques like transits and microlensing. The project, which uses a donated Hubble-class mirror, came in ahead of schedule and under its initial budget, despite facing proposed budget cuts from the White House.
