Almost half of all objects currently orbiting Earth are classified as space junk, a problem that has intensified dramatically over the past decade due to increased space launches and reduced costs. According to data from the U.S. Space Force and a report by Accu, out of 33,269 trackable objects, 17,682 are satellites, while the remaining 15,587 are various forms of debris, including expended rocket bodies and unidentifiable fragments. This means approximately 47% of tracked objects are space junk, a figure that is likely higher given that many operational satellites are no longer functional.
The accumulation of space junk, which began with the launch of Sputnik 1 in 1957, accelerated between 2020 and 2025 with an increase of about 10,000 trackable objects. The scale of the problem is likely underestimated, as millions of smaller, untrackable objects like paint flecks also pose a significant threat. These objects, traveling at speeds over 17,000 miles per hour, can cause substantial damage, as evidenced by incidents like the International Space Station crew seeking shelter from a decommissioned Russian satellite's fragments in 2024, and Chinese taikonauts being stranded on Tiangong station in 2025 due to suspected space junk damage to their return capsule. The primary risk from this debris is to satellites, with a ratio of seven tracked pieces of junk for every 10 satellites.
The leading contributors to orbital debris are China, responsible for an estimated 65% of the junk, followed by the U.S. and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) at 40% and 23%, respectively. This highlights a disproportionate contribution from a few key players to a global problem. While space agencies such as NASA, JAXA, UK Space Agency, and ESA are exploring cleanup methods, and several private companies like Astroscale and ClearSpace are entering the space debris removal market, Accu emphasizes the need for spacecraft designers to prioritize mitigating this threat. The nascent market for debris removal and satellite servicing is largely supported by government grants, with companies like ClearSpace raising $30 million to pursue solutions for inspecting, repairing, and maintaining spacecraft in orbit. The space infrastructure is critical for global economic functions, including GPS and financial transactions, making the cleanup effort crucial.
