Such disruptions are not isolated events but rather a sequence of abnormal occurrences that cumulatively impact the ability to consistently supply food.

Beyond climate change, other structural forces are contributing to this "end of cheap food" era. Weak farm profitability limits investment and resilience, while rising labor costs across the food supply chain and increased livestock welfare standards also drive up production expenses. Demand growth continues to outpace supply, further exacerbating the issue. Geopolitical events, such as the escalating war in Ukraine, further intensify these pressures. Oxford Economics predicts global food prices to increase by 11.8% this year and 4.8% in 2027, with cereals, fruits, vegetables, and dairy being most affected. The conflict's impact on oil (diesel) and fertilizer prices, coupled with disruptions to Black Sea grain exports, significantly raises input costs for farmers. Wheat, a fertilizer-intensive crop, is expected to jump 36% year-on-year to $6.92 a bushel in Q3 2026, affecting processed foods like bread and pasta, with consumers seeing effects on fresh food prices within 2-3 months and processed food prices in 6-9 months.

The persistent nature of these food price increases is prompting a debate among central banks. Historically, food and energy prices were often excluded from core inflation measures due to their volatility. However, the sustained inflationary pressure from climate change and other factors means these shocks are no longer temporary. The European Central Bank and Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research estimate annual food inflation rates could rise by up to 3.2 percentage points per year within the next decade, leading to an increase in overall inflation of up to 1.18 percentage points by 2035.
