Google has expanded its Personal Intelligence feature to all users in the United States, allowing its AI assistant, Gemini, and AI Mode in Search to access and utilize data from connected Google applications like Gmail, Google Photos, and Search history. This capability, previously limited to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, is now accessible to free-tier users through AI Mode in Search, Gemini in Chrome, and the Gemini app. The feature is designed to personalize responses and suggestions without requiring users to manually provide context, making tasks like planning a family vacation or finding specific shopping recommendations more efficient.
For example, Personal Intelligence can suggest tailored travel itineraries by referencing hotel bookings from Gmail and past travel memories from Google Photos, even recommending specific activities like an ice cream parlor based on previous ice cream-related photos. Similarly, for shopping, it can recommend brands or items based on past purchases or even suggest appropriate clothing for a trip by analyzing flight confirmations and destination weather. This integration aims to create a more helpful and individualized user experience, mimicking a human assistant who has a deep understanding of a user's life and preferences.
Despite the extensive data access, Google emphasizes user control and privacy. The feature is opt-in, meaning users must explicitly grant permission for Gemini to connect with their Google apps, and these connections can be disconnected at any time. Google also states that Gemini and AI Mode do not train directly on the entire Gmail inbox or Google Photos library. Instead, training is focused on limited information, such as specific prompts given to Gemini or AI Mode and the model's subsequent responses, to improve functionality over time. The feature is currently available only for personal Google accounts, excluding business, enterprise, or education users.
