Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) has launched a new $600 million fund, dubbed the "Machine Age" fund, which will focus on investing in companies that address the physical infrastructure needs of the burgeoning artificial intelligence sector. This fund is part of a broader strategy by a16z to tackle bottlenecks in the AI supply chain, moving beyond just software and computing power to include more foundational elements.

The Machine Age fund will specifically target investments in areas such as robotics, energy infrastructure, advanced manufacturing, and other hardware-intensive technologies crucial for AI's expansion. This approach recognizes that the rapid growth of AI is increasingly constrained by the availability and efficiency of its physical underpinnings, including everything from specialized chips to the energy required to power data centers. The fund aims to support innovation in these less-explored but critical areas.

This new initiative complements a16z's existing significant investments in AI, which include a $1.25 billion "war chest" established in 2024 for AI infrastructure and an additional $1.7 billion committed later, bringing their dedicated AI infrastructure funding to nearly $3 billion. The firm is also reportedly seeking to raise a $20 billion megafund for growth-stage AI investments. The Machine Age fund's focus on the physical layer highlights a growing recognition within the venture capital community that sustained AI progress requires robust, scalable, and efficient physical infrastructure, from energy grids to manufacturing capabilities.
