Sweden has announced a significant military aid package to Ukraine, which includes the sale of 20 of its advanced Saab Gripen E/F fighter jets and the donation of 16 older Gripen C/D models. This initiative, valued at approximately SEK 25.2 billion ($2.4 billion), aims to strengthen Ukraine's air defense at a crucial time in its conflict with Russia. The C/D versions of the Gripen will come equipped with advanced ammunition, including IRIS-T, AMRAAM, and METEOR missiles.
This fighter jet provision is part of a broader military support framework from Sweden, totaling SEK 80 billion ($7.6 billion) for 2026–2027. The aid package also encompasses procurement of additional ammunition, electromagnetic warfare materiel, and support for Ukraine’s long-range capabilities. The comprehensive support highlights Sweden's commitment to enhancing Ukraine's military strength and resilience.
In addition to the fighter jets, Sweden has previously provided diverse military and civilian aid. This includes tanks, advanced weapon systems, and material from national stocks such as Archer artillery units, Leopard 2 battle tanks, and various anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems. The country also plans to provide support for civil defense, with the Swedish Coast Guard tasked with preparing and transferring a large number of surveillance vessels, high-speed boats, workboats, and vehicles to enhance Ukrainian maritime surveillance. The Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency will donate equipment for the energy sector and contribute personnel to NATO's support initiative.
