China Evergrande Group's liquidators are seeking 57 billion yuan ($8.4 billion) in damages from three PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) entities in Hong Kong, making it one of the largest corporate lawsuit claims in the city's history. The lawsuit targets PwC International, PwC Hong Kong, and PwC China, alleging negligence and misrepresentation in PwC's auditing work for Evergrande's financial statements from 2017 to 2020. The liquidators, Tiffany Wong and Eddie Middleton of Alvarez & Marsal, filed the original case in March 2024, approximately two months after Evergrande was ordered to be wound up.
A key aspect of the ongoing legal proceedings is the application by PwC International to be removed from the lawsuit, arguing that it merely coordinates PwC’s global network from London and does not provide audit or advisory services itself. Its lawyers contend that only PwC Hong Kong and PwC China conducted Evergrande's audits and that these are independent member firms, not subsidiaries of PwC International. Conversely, the liquidators' counsel argues that PwC International, as the global coordinating entity, is responsible for maintaining standards across its member companies and should be held liable for audit damages.
The lawsuit arises from Evergrande's massive accounting fraud, where regulators found the developer overstated revenue by 564 billion yuan in 2019-2020 by prematurely recognizing property sales. The proceedings are critical for Evergrande's liquidators in their years-long effort to recover at least a portion of creditors' investments. Evergrande's debt burden is estimated at HK$350 billion, and only approximately $255 million in assets had been realized through sales as of August 2025. Hong Kong regulators previously fined PwC Hong Kong $38 million and barred it from new clients for six months, while PwC's Chinese arm received a record 441 million yuan fine and a six-month suspension from Chinese regulators over its Evergrande work. A Hong Kong Deputy High Court Judge is expected to rule on PwC International's removal application within three months.
