The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is reportedly investigating Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund that experienced a significant downturn in July. The firm, founded by Leopold Aschenbrenner, an OpenAI alumnus, had initially seen rapid growth due to its heavy investment in AI stocks. However, a market correction in late July led to the loss of billions of dollars in firm value.

According to reports, the SEC has issued subpoenas to banks that conducted business with Situational Awareness. These subpoenas are specifically targeting financial institutions that supervised the fund's trading activities and provided funding. While the government has instructed banks to preserve all relevant information, it has clarified that Situational Awareness has not been accused of any wrongdoing at this stage of the probe.

Situational Awareness has publicly stated that it expects scrutiny for high-profile funds and intends to fully cooperate with any regulatory requests. This development follows a period of intense volatility for the hedge fund, which saw it increase exposure to semiconductor firms like Micron Technology Inc. and Sandisk Corp. to the tune of $11 billion (approximately a quarter of its net assets) in the second quarter, while cutting positions in Nvidia Corp., Broadcom Inc., and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. before the downturn. The fund's struggles also led to Citadel's flagship fund surging 5.9% in July after acquiring a significant portion of Situational Awareness's public stocks at a discount.
