Chinese technology IPOs are poised for their strongest year since 2023, largely fueled by Beijing's strategic push for self-reliance in critical sectors like artificial intelligence and semiconductors amidst competition with the U.S. As of June 18, technology companies have collectively raised $3.1 billion from stock market listings in China this year, a more than fivefold increase compared to the same period last year. Nearly 50 companies, including robotics startups and semiconductor firms, have applied for initial public offerings in Shanghai and Shenzhen, with fundraising plans totaling at least 126.1 billion yuan ($18.7 billion).
Key players in the Chinese AI landscape are actively pursuing IPOs. Moonshot AI, known for its Kimi chatbot, is reportedly preparing for a Hong Kong listing within the next six months, following a funding round that valued the startup at over $30 billion. DeepSeek, a respected AI lab, is targeting Shanghai's STAR market for an IPO as early as the second quarter of 2027, having recently raised $7.4 billion in its first external funding round at a valuation exceeding $50 billion, and is now seeking fresh capital at a valuation as high as $71 billion. This trend follows earlier 2026 Hong Kong debuts by Minimax and Z.ai.
The choice of listing venue often reflects strategic considerations. Companies deemed "national champions" or those replacing foreign technology, such as robot maker Unitree and GPU manufacturer Moore Threads, tend to favor mainland Chinese markets like Shanghai. For instance, memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) is planning a 29.5 billion yuan Shanghai IPO, set to be the largest this year. Hong Kong, conversely, remains a destination for larger internet companies, with Shein and Xiaohongshu reportedly working towards Hong Kong IPOs. Baidu also plans to convert its secondary listing in Hong Kong to a primary one. While Hong Kong had a strong IPO performance in 2025, U.S. markets are expected to lead in 2026 with significant offerings from companies like SpaceX and SK Hynix, alongside anticipated IPOs from OpenAI and Anthropic.
