Younger generations, specifically Gen Z, are increasingly using TikTok and other social media platforms to revive their parents' struggling fashion shops. This phenomenon is particularly evident in independent boutiques that have faced challenges due to rising rents and changing consumer habits. By creating viral content, these individuals introduce their family businesses and their unique product offerings to a wider, often younger demographic.
One notable example is Zineb Lazraq, who saved her father Rachid's London shoe shop, Rich Collection Italia. After a French TikToker's video garnered over 300,000 views, Zineb, with her background in journalism and video editing, took over the store's social media. Her subsequent videos went viral, leading to long queues outside the shop and significant demand for her father's Y2K-inspired footwear. She is now expanding the store's online presence with a TikTok shop and a website to cater to global interest.
Similarly, CB Positano, an Amalfi Coast shop founded by siblings Nino, Sandra, and Anna Maria Buonocore, experienced a resurgence in interest thanks to TikTok. Although the founders themselves are not active on social media, users have posted videos featuring the shop's distinctive Italian-made womenswear, bags, and accessories, leading to millions of views under the #cbpositano tag. Influencers like Lydia Brunker and Cassie Warren have further boosted the shop's visibility by sharing their shopping experiences there, highlighting the appeal of unique, story-rich items.
This trend aligns with Gen Z's broader shopping preferences, which often prioritize uniqueness, affordability, and sustainability. While some Gen Z consumers contribute to the success of fast-fashion, many are also driving a steep rise in the rental and resale markets, projected to reach $77 billion in the US by 2025 for second-hand apparel and $7 billion globally for rental by 2025. Platforms like Depop, Vestiaire Collective, and Vinted resonate with this demographic, offering a "treasure hunt" for distinct items and a sense of community, appealing to both "playful aspirational" shoppers seeking access to top brands at good prices and "conscious consumers" with sustainable values.
