Shein, the fast-fashion giant, is preparing for its highly anticipated stock market debut in Hong Kong on September 1, seeking a valuation of nearly $27 billion. The company plans to offer almost 280 million shares, priced between HK$47.60 ($6.07) and HK$49.50 each. At the top end of this range, the share sale is projected to raise $1.77 billion for Shein, valuing the company at $26.8 billion.

This valuation, however, is a significant decrease from its peak of $100 billion in 2022 and $64 billion in 2023, reflecting challenges such as weaker sales growth and increased operational costs. The IPO is being supported by major Wall Street investment banks including Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and JP Morgan. Shein had previously faced regulatory hurdles that scuttled its plans to list in the US and London, with Hong Kong now emerging as a more favorable market, especially for Chinese companies wary of US-China tensions.

Shein's financial performance has seen a downturn, with the company reporting a $99 million loss in the first three months of the year, a stark contrast to a net income of $395 million a year earlier. This shift is partly attributed to the removal of the de minimis import duty waiver by the US, which previously allowed retailers like Shein to ship goods to the US without incurring import taxes. This exemption's removal, and similar restrictions in the EU, have been cited as undermining Shein's core business model and narrowing its price advantage over competitors such as Primark and H&M. The company also faces ongoing scrutiny over its environmental impact and allegations of forced labor in its supply chains, issues that contributed to the collapse of its London listing attempt.

Shein's IPO is the largest new share sale in Hong Kong in 2026, surpassing Momenta Global's $751 million offering in July. It is also the third-largest IPO in Asia this year. Cornerstone investors, including Boyu Capital, Tiger Global, General Atlantic, Tencent Holdings, Greenwoods, Taikang Life, and UBS, have committed to purchasing approximately $383 million worth of shares. The company plans to allocate about 80% of the capital raised to enhance its technology and expand its global brand presence.
