The Jayhawks released their 12th studio album, "Sanctuary Park," on August 28, 2026, celebrating their 40th anniversary. This album sees them reunite with legendary producer Bob Ezrin, known for his work with Pink Floyd and Lou Reed, and who previously produced the band's 2000 album, "Smile." While "Smile" was noted for its experimentation, "Sanctuary Park" is described as a return to the band's established melodious sound and strengths, focusing on rich harmonies and comfortable exuberance.
The album was largely recorded in Toronto over 10 days, reflecting a more organic, human-made sound that Ezrin desired. Frontman Gary Louris, now a permanent Canadian resident, wrote or co-wrote all 11 songs and sings lead on 10. The lyrics cover a broad range of emotions and concepts, including love, breaking away, and political observations, particularly on "American Midnight." Louris also noted that a significant portion of the record is an "ode to his wife, Stephanie," with the title itself named after a park in Dundas, Ontario, significant to her childhood.
The album features a blend of Americana, pop, country rock, and folk. Notable tracks include the first single "Keeping Our Heads Above Water," co-written with Mat Kearney, and "Kingston Girl," both highlighting the band's signature harmonies with contributions from drummer Tim O’Reagan and keyboardist Karen Grotberg. While there are fewer instrumental solos, the album incorporates textural elements like pedal steel, accordion, and mandolin on various tracks. The closing track, "Rowing the Boat," is described as a charming acoustic ditty.
Ezrin expressed his appreciation for the band's sound, stating, "There is a gentleness and a sweetness to their sound, and I found myself craving a little bit more of that." The album is released via Thirty Tigers. The Jayhawks are also scheduled for a lengthy tour in the latter half of 2026, with dates including Minneapolis' State Theatre on November 21.
