Bitcoin experienced a significant rally, climbing over $77,000 and reaching its highest level since early June, with some reports even putting it above $79,000 on Friday. This surge represents a nearly 19% increase since Wednesday and a 22% rise over the week, pushing the cryptocurrency into a bull market. The entire crypto market capitalization increased by approximately $500 billion this week, up around 23%. This upward trend follows a period where Bitcoin had dropped from a January high of around $95,000 to below $60,000 by the end of June, as investors moved away from speculative assets and concerns over regulatory inaction lingered.

Key drivers of this rally include a combination of macroeconomic shifts, a more positive regulatory environment, and renewed institutional demand. The U.S. Treasury Department's unexpected announcement on Wednesday to significantly increase its buybacks of long-term government debt, effectively doubling planned purchases, played a crucial role. This maneuver by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent pushed U.S. bond yields lower, making alternative assets like gold and Bitcoin more attractive to investors and weakening the dollar. FxPro's chief market analyst, Alex Kuptsikevich, noted a "dramatic" shift in investor sentiment, signaling the start of a cryptocurrency bull market.

Further boosting confidence was President Donald Trump's meeting with crypto industry leaders and his subsequent urging of Congress to expedite crypto legislation. This move reduced regulatory uncertainty, making it easier for institutions to engage with the crypto market. Concurrent with these developments, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw substantial inflows, attracting over $1 billion in just two days ($517 million on August 19 and $606 million on August 20). Julio Moreno of CoinShares reported that ETFs purchased roughly 7,500 BTC in a single day, marking their highest daily level since April, indicating a strong return of institutional buying interest. The combination of these factors also triggered massive short liquidations, with an estimated $4 billion in crypto shorts liquidated over two to three days, including about $2.75 billion in Bitcoin shorts during a single 24-hour period, accelerating the price ascent.
