Citadel, led by Ken Griffin, has successfully reduced over 80% of the aggregate risk from the portfolio it acquired from Leopold Aschenbrenner's Situational Awareness hedge fund. This de-risking process involved nearly 100 block trades, amounting to over $4 billion in market value. These trades included the largest intraday block trades of the year in 10 different names, showcasing Citadel's ability to swiftly execute complex transactions and distribute risk.
The acquisition occurred last month after Situational Awareness, an AI-focused fund, faced severe losses in July, plummeting by 67% due to a reversal in highly concentrated and leveraged bets on AI-related stocks. This forced the fund to unwind most of its public equities portfolio, which had reached $16 billion. Citadel's rapid intervention helped stabilize the market during the last two trading days of July, reportedly purchasing some positions at a discount of over 10%.
Citadel's flagship multi-strategy fund, Citadel Wellington Fund, saw significant gains from this transaction, surging 5.94% in July. This boost contributed to its year-to-date return of 12%. The swift and efficient handling of the distressed portfolio highlights Citadel's operational capacity and its reputation for seizing opportunities during market dislocations. Griffin lauded the cooperation of trading and prime brokerage teams from both firms involved, which was crucial for completing a transaction of this magnitude in a compressed timeframe.
