The murder trial of Duane "Keffe D" Davis for the 1996 killing of Tupac Shakur is underway in Las Vegas. Davis, a 63-year-old former gang leader, has pleaded not guilty to murder with a deadly weapon with intent to promote, further, or assist a criminal gang. Prosecutors allege that Davis orchestrated the drive-by shooting in retaliation for an earlier beating of his nephew, Orlando "Baby Lane" Anderson, by Shakur and his entourage. Davis reportedly did not pull the trigger himself but is accused of planning the shooting and supplying the weapon.

The shooting occurred on September 7, 1996, after Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight attended a Mike Tyson fight. Hours later, while in a black BMW near the Las Vegas Strip, a white Cadillac pulled alongside them, and someone opened fire. Shakur was shot multiple times and died six days later, while Knight survived with minor injuries. The killing became a long-standing mystery with numerous theories, and Davis's arrest in 2023 marked the first time charges had been filed in the case.

Shakur, who was 25 at the time of his death, had already achieved significant fame and cultural impact. His album, "All Eyez on Me," released months before his death, sold over 5,000,000 copies and cemented his place in gangsta rap. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was a Black Panther, influencing his politically charged lyrics. His death immortalized him as a martyr for the lifestyle often depicted in his music. The ongoing trial is a significant moment for one of hip-hop's most enduring mysteries.
