Stripe, the payments giant, is expanding its reach into the artificial intelligence market with the acquisition of OpenRouter. While the exact terms were not disclosed, reports, citing the New York Times, indicate the deal is valued at approximately $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion earmarked for OpenRouter's founders. This acquisition comes less than three months after OpenRouter raised $113 million at a valuation of around $1.3 billion, highlighting the rapid increase in its perceived value and the competitive bidding landscape, which reportedly included Databricks.

OpenRouter has gained significant traction among developers by providing a single API to access and switch between hundreds of AI models from various providers, including those from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI, as well as cost-efficient open-weight models from labs like DeepSeek and Z.ai. Its platform routes requests, manages fallbacks, and optimizes for factors like price, latency, and quality. Stripe CEO Patrick Collison stated that the acquisition will help businesses "maximize profitability by routing their requests intelligently and spending their tokens efficiently," emphasizing that "tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI."

This move by Stripe positions the company not just in payments but also in AI expense management, an area attracting increasing interest from other firms like Rippling and Ramp. Analysts like Franco Granda of PitchBook note that this acquisition is Stripe's "deliberate attempt to embed itself into the middle of capital flows in the AI era," giving it insight into how coders use AI and a degree of influence over both AI model suppliers and hyperscalers. OpenRouter, which processes over 10 trillion tokens daily, traditionally earns revenue through a 5.5% fee on credits purchased through its platform, rather than marking up inference prices.

The acquisition underscores Stripe's strategy to become the economic infrastructure for AI, similar to its role in online payments. The company aims to help businesses manage both sides of profitability in the AI era: maximizing revenue and efficacy while minimizing costs associated with rapidly evolving and repriced AI models. OpenRouter's founders believe that combining with Stripe will also enhance their ability to combat fraud and abuse within the AI ecosystem, a growing concern for AI companies.
