Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson, a 23-year-old left-handed pitcher, made his MLB debut for the San Francisco Giants, delivering two scoreless innings against the Cleveland Guardians. Wilkinson, who was acquired from Cleveland on May 9 in exchange for catcher Patrick Bailey, retired six of the seven batters he faced. He topped out at 91 mph with his unique "Invisiball" fastball. His performance set the stage for the Giants' 1-0 victory at Progressive Field.

Wilkinson's debut was a highly anticipated event, with approximately 30 friends and family members traveling from Canada, Seattle, and Arizona to watch him play. Many wore captain hats in honor of his "Tugboat" nickname, which originated from his T-ball days. Wilkinson primarily served as an opener for right-hander Adrian Houser, who continued to shut down the Guardians, striking out three over five-plus scoreless innings. The Giants scored the only run in the fourth inning when Rafael Devers doubled and Victor Bericoto hit an RBI single.

Prior to his call-up, Wilkinson had a strong season in Double-A with a 1.87 ERA over 43.1 innings, striking out 10.2 batters per nine innings across both the Giants' and Guardians' affiliates. However, he faced some challenges in Triple-A Sacramento, where he recorded a 5.15 ERA over 43.2 innings. Despite this, his consistent performance against left-handed batters in the minors suggests he could either find a role as a reliever or potentially join the starting rotation, especially given the struggles of fellow southpaw Carson Whisenhunt, who has a 7.03 ERA over seven starts in 2026.
