US stock futures fell and long-dated Treasuries resumed declines as rising oil prices brought inflation concerns back into focus for investors. Walmart Inc. experienced a 6% drop in premarket trading following disappointing earnings, which fueled worries about the state of American consumers and subsequently pulled down other retail stocks.
S&P 500 futures retreated by 0.6%. The yield on the 30-year Treasury bond increased by seven basis points to 5.26%. Bitcoin saw a surge, trading above $70,000 for the first time since June, while gold dipped below $4,500 an ounce. The dollar, however, remained largely unchanged.
This market movement occurred despite earlier efforts by the US Treasury Department to ease pressure on the bond market by announcing a significant increase in its planned purchases of longer-term Treasuries. These measures, initially providing some relief, appeared to be losing their impact as investor skepticism grew regarding their long-term effectiveness in stabilizing the market.
