The seemingly unremarkable corrugated steel shipping container, measuring 8 feet wide, 8 feet 6 inches high, and 40 feet long, has been identified as a primary driver of globalization, even more so than free trade agreements. Prior to its widespread adoption, moving goods across the Atlantic, such as by the SS Warrior in 1954, could take ten days just for loading and unloading, costing around $420 per ton in today's money and extending the total journey to three months. Today, the cost for similar transit can be less than $50 per ton, and ports can unload and reload ships within 24 hours.

The modern shipping container system was pioneered by Malcom McLean, a trucking entrepreneur who had no prior experience in shipping. His invention enabled significant cost reductions in transportation; for instance, the cost of moving cargo from land transport to ship and back accounted for half of the door-to-door shipping cost before containerization. The efficiency gained also reduced manufacturers' and retailers' inventory costs significantly. The container's impact was further highlighted when the U.S. military adopted McLean's system during the Vietnam War to address logistical challenges, subsequently opening up trans-Pacific trade with Japan.

The standardization of container dimensions (8 feet wide, 8 feet high, and either 20 or 40 feet long) was crucial, allowing trucks, trains, ports, and ships worldwide to be purpose-built for their handling. This standardization, coupled with automation and computerization, enables modern container ships to carry up to 3,000 containers and ports to move up to 10,000 containers daily. This efficiency led to a dramatic increase in international trade volume, growing more than twice as fast as global manufacturing output in the decade after the container's international introduction in 1966. While it led to job displacement in traditional port industries, it has provided consumers with a wider variety of lower-cost imported goods.
