Mark Walter is reportedly exploring the sale of his stake in Chelsea Football Club to Clearlake Capital, the club's majority owner. Walter's family office has recently reached out to the private equity firm regarding this potential sale. The discussions come amidst a period of turbulence for Walter, who recently sold his controlling stake in the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, just one year after acquiring it for $10 billion. This Lakers sale is believed by some to be linked to liquidity needs stemming from federal investigations into Walter's insurance empire.
Walter and Todd Boehly each hold a stake of just under 13% in Chelsea, having bought into the club in 2022. Clearlake Capital holds a 61.5% majority stake. The club was acquired from Roman Abramovich in 2022 for approximately £2.3 billion ($2.9 billion at the time). Chelsea is currently valued at $4 billion by Sportico, suggesting Walter's stake could be worth around $520 million, though earlier reports indicated he and Boehly valued the club at £5 billion ($6.4 billion), which would put their individual stakes at about £640 million ($820 million).
The potential sale and ongoing discussions among Chelsea's ownership group are taking place against a backdrop of reported rifts, with both Walter and Boehly having previously explored buying out Clearlake, and vice versa. These internal tensions within the ownership group date back to 2024. Furthermore, Walter's business empire is under investigation by US federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission concerning the treatment and disclosure of affiliated investments within his insurance companies, specifically Delaware Life and Clear Spring Life & Annuity.
