Stripe, the programmable financial services company, has agreed to acquire OpenRouter, a leading AI model gateway and routing platform, for $8 billion. This acquisition marks Stripe's largest ever deal and is part of a broader strategy to expand its presence in the burgeoning AI economy. OpenRouter specializes in helping businesses optimize token usage across over 400 AI models from more than 80 providers, by dynamically evaluating requests and routing them to the optimal model based on factors like task complexity, price, speed, and reliability. This capability is already utilized by major companies such as NVIDIA, Zoom, and Lovable.
The deal comes shortly after OpenRouter raised funds at a reported $1.3 billion valuation, underscoring the high demand for cost-effective AI solutions. Stripe aims to integrate OpenRouter's platform to help companies manage both revenue maximization and cost minimization in the AI era. Patrick Collison, co-founder and CEO of Stripe, highlighted that tokens are the central currency for AI companies, and efficient use of scarce compute resources is crucial for economic potential. This acquisition will allow Stripe to enhance its offerings by helping businesses intelligently route requests and efficiently spend tokens.
Alex Atallah, co-founder and CEO of OpenRouter, emphasized the belief in a multi-model future where no single AI model is optimal for all tasks. He stated that joining Stripe will accelerate their mission to provide a neutral layer for orchestrating and managing diverse AI models, bringing the full AI ecosystem to businesses. While the exact financial terms were not officially disclosed by Stripe, reports from The New York Times suggest the price tag is around $7.5 billion, with $1.5 billion allocated to OpenRouter's founders. This acquisition is seen as a significant move for Stripe to solidify its position in the fast-growing artificial intelligence sector.
