Stripe Inc. has reached an agreement to purchase OpenRouter Inc., a rapidly expanding gateway to artificial intelligence models. This acquisition signifies Stripe's deeper push into the infrastructure supporting the AI boom. While official terms of the deal were not disclosed by the companies, previous reports from Bloomberg indicated Stripe had clinched a deal to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. This figure represents a significant increase from the startup's reported $1.3 billion valuation just months prior.

OpenRouter specializes in helping businesses route and optimize token usage across over 400 models from more than 80 providers. Stripe aims to integrate OpenRouter's platform to assist companies in managing the cost-versus-performance tradeoffs associated with the rapid release and repricing of AI models. This acquisition is expected to help businesses maximize revenue and efficacy while minimizing costs in the AI era. OpenRouter's platform dynamically evaluates requests and routes them to the optimal model based on factors like task complexity, price, speed, and reliability.

Patrick Collison, co-founder and CEO of Stripe, stated that "tokens are the central currency for companies building with AI," and this acquisition will help businesses maximize profitability by intelligently routing requests and efficiently spending tokens. Alex Atallah, co-founder and CEO of OpenRouter, emphasized their belief in a multi-model intelligence future where no single model is optimal for every task. Joining Stripe will allow OpenRouter to accelerate its mission of providing a neutral layer for orchestrating and managing the AI ecosystem for businesses.

This acquisition comes as Stripe, valued at close to $160 billion earlier this year, continues to expand its technological offerings. The deal highlights the high demand for cost-efficient AI solutions among businesses, with OpenRouter gaining popularity for enabling the use of generally more cost-efficient, open-weight AI models, often stemming from Chinese labs like DeepSeek and Z.ai, compared to proprietary models from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic.

While Stripe did not officially disclose the financial terms, the reported $7.5 billion price tag by The New York Times, with $1.5 billion allocated to OpenRouter's founders, underscores the significant investment. This acquisition follows OpenRouter's $113 million funding round less than three months ago, which valued the company at about $1.3 billion, demonstrating a dramatic increase in valuation.
