U.S.-based employers announced 33,429 job cuts in July, representing a 27% decrease from the 45,849 cuts announced in June. This figure also marks a substantial 46% drop compared to the 62,075 layoff plans announced in July of the previous year. According to a report released by global outplacement and executive coaching firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, July's total is the lowest monthly count in two years.
This July total is the lowest since July 2024, when 25,885 cuts were announced. It is also the fifth time this year that monthly job cuts have been lower than the corresponding month in the previous year. Through the end of July, employers have announced a total of 477,033 job cuts.
This year-to-date total of 477,033 job cuts is down 41% from the 806,383 cuts announced during the first seven months of 2025.
