President Prabowo Subianto has nominated Destry Damayanti as the single candidate for the next Bank Indonesia governor. This decision aims to quickly provide market certainty, especially given recent economic instability where the rupiah fell to a record low of 18,190 against the dollar on June 8, leading the central bank to raise interest rates by 100 basis points in May and June. The nomination process is expected to commence after parliament returns from recess on August 14.
Damayanti, who has been the senior deputy governor since 2019 and reappointed in 2024, is considered a familiar and comforting figure to investors due to her extensive experience in monetary operations, financial markets, and payment systems. Sources indicate she maintains strong relationships with Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa and President Prabowo, suggesting improved cooperation between the central bank and the government, which has previously seen disagreements over liquidity policies.
The parliament, controlled by Prabowo's coalition, has one month to approve the candidate. While presidents can nominate up to three names, the practice since 2010 has been to submit a single nominee, all of whom have secured approval. Aida Budiman, another deputy governor, is expected to be nominated for the senior deputy governor position. Damayanti, 62, holds a master's degree from Cornell University and previously worked at Citibank and Bank Mandiri, as well as serving on the board of the Deposit Insurer corporation.
