ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is making an aggressive push into artificial intelligence, with discussions around capital expenditures of up to $70 billion this year for data centers and AI infrastructure. This significant investment would more than double last year's spending, largely funded by the estimated $50 billion profit earned in 2025. The company's goal is to lead the Chinese AI market and challenge major US players. This push is also evidenced by its search for a $20 billion loan, its largest offshore borrowing yet, which will support its AI ambitions.
In line with this strategy, ByteDance has recently released its Doubao 2.0 AI model, an upgrade to China's most widely used AI app, which already boasts 155 million weekly active users. The pro version of Doubao 2.0 is said to offer complex reasoning and multi-step task execution capabilities comparable to OpenAI's GPT 5.2 and Google's Gemini 3 Pro, while significantly reducing usage costs. The company is positioning Doubao 2.0 for the "agent era," where AI models are expected to perform complex real-world tasks.
ByteDance's intensified focus on AI comes amidst growing competition, particularly from rivals like Alibaba, which saw daily active users on its Qwen AI app surge from 7 million to 58 million after a 3 billion yuan ($400 million) coupon campaign. Doubao 2.0's release, ahead of an anticipated new DeepSeek model, aims to prevent a repeat of DeepSeek's rapid rise to fame last year. The company's internal inference chip, SeedChip, and procurement of Nvidia-class processors are key parts of its AI infrastructure investment.
