Google has announced significant leadership changes to accelerate its AI product development. Koray Kavukcuoglu, previously the Chief Technology Officer of Google's DeepMind AI lab, has been appointed to the newly created role of chief AI architect and a senior vice president. In this expanded role, Kavukcuoglu will report directly to CEO Sundar Pichai and will focus on integrating Google's advanced AI models into its products with greater speed and efficiency. He will also maintain his CTO position at DeepMind, reporting to its CEO Demis Hassabis. This move highlights Google's push to leverage its AI research, particularly as it faces pressure to show financial returns on an estimated $75 billion in AI capital expenditures this year, amidst rising competition and antitrust scrutiny.
Further organizational shifts include the transfer of the Gemini app team, led by Sissie Hsiao, to Google DeepMind under Demis Hassabis. This consolidation is designed to improve feedback loops, expedite the deployment of new models within the Gemini app, and streamline post-training efforts. Additionally, Prabhakar Raghavan, who previously led Search, ads, and commerce, has transitioned to the role of chief technologist, working closely with Pichai. Nick Fox will take over Raghavan's former responsibilities as the new SVP of Google's "Knowledge & Information" organization, overseeing search, ads, maps, and commerce.
These changes reflect Google's broader strategy to align its research and product development teams more closely, mirroring similar moves by companies like Meta.
