Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Google DeepMind, is transitioning from his operational role to become the unit's chairman and will also take on the title of chief scientist for Google parent company, Alphabet. This move coincides with increased involvement from Google co-founder Sergey Brin in the company's artificial intelligence initiatives. Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current CTO of Google DeepMind, will replace Hassabis as CEO.
The leadership shake-up also includes the departure of chief scientist Jeff Dean and several Google AI colleagues, who are leaving to start their own independent company, Discovery Loop, with investment from Google. Other notable departures include senior fellow Sanjay Ghemawat, DeepMind VP Oriol Vinyals, and Google Brain co-founder Quoc Le. These changes come amidst a challenging period for Google's AI organization, as it reportedly struggles to keep pace with rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic.
The news has had a negative impact on Google's stock, which fell over 4% following the announcement. This decline occurred despite a recent 13% rally from a post-earnings low. The changes are seen as a dramatic management shake-up, raising questions about Google's confidence in its AI development and coming after a period of pushback from DeepMind employees and high-profile talent exits, including some due to low morale. Hassabis, who won a Nobel Prize in 2024 for his work on AlphaFold, emphasized his desire to focus on the "big picture" and the scientific aspects of AI development.
