Commerzbank AG announced plans for a share buyback of up to €1 billion ($1.2 billion) as CEO Bettina Orlopp seeks to deliver on promises for increased payouts. This move comes as the German lender is set to resume talks with UniCredit, which has accumulated a nearly 50% stake in Commerzbank, after a two-year standoff.

The bank also slightly raised its full-year net income forecast to approximately €2.5 billion, up from a previous estimate of €2.4 billion. Net interest income guidance was also improved, now expected to be around €8 billion, an increase from the earlier projection of €7.8 billion.

Commerzbank's decision to pursue the buyback and improve its financial outlook signals a strong position as it prepares for discussions with UniCredit. These talks are aimed at determining the path forward for a potential pan-European deal, with Commerzbank emphasizing the need for constructive dialogue and a shared understanding of the business model.
