Citadel's flagship multistrategy Wellington fund recorded a significant 5.9% return in July, marking its strongest monthly performance since 2022 and pushing its year-to-date gains to 12%. This substantial increase was largely attributed to Citadel's strategic acquisition of a discounted public stock portfolio from Situational Awareness, a hedge fund founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, which faced rapid unraveling due to steep losses from a misguided AI strategy.
Citadel purchased these holdings at a considerable discount after Situational Awareness was forced into a liquidation sale to meet margin calls. This move allowed Citadel to capitalize on the subsequent market rebound, with the firm's assets under management standing at approximately $71 billion as of July 1. Notably, Citadel has a history of leveraging periods of market disruption to deploy capital into distressed assets, making this acquisition a characteristic strategic play.
The firm's tactical trading fund, which combines discretionary equity investing with quantitative strategies, saw an 11.1% gain in July, bringing its 2026 gains to 27%. The equities fund also advanced by an impressive 14.2% last month, achieving a 27% return for 2026. Both the tactical fund and the equities fund experienced their best-ever month in July, underscoring the broad positive impact of the Situational Awareness deal and overall market recovery.
Before the acquisition, the Wellington fund had only posted a modest 0.45% gain through July 24, highlighting the pivotal role of the Situational Awareness transaction in boosting Citadel's performance. The distressed fund's rapid unwinding, particularly its large stakes in AI infrastructure companies and bets against software stocks, created an opportunity for Citadel to acquire assets like Nebius and Micron at a significant discount, which subsequently rebounded.
