The administrators of Market Financial Solutions (MFS) have filed a lawsuit against Barclays in a London court. This legal action follows MFS's insolvency, which has left it with debts exceeding £1 billion ($1.3 billion). Barclays is listed as a significant creditor, being owed roughly £600 million ($760 million) of this total, although other reports suggest Barclays' exposure might be closer to £500 million ($633 million).
Barclays had previously blocked transactions linked to MFS months before the lender's collapse. Furthermore, Barclays exited its lending arrangement with MFS and froze the mortgage firm's accounts, leading Wells Fargo & Co. to step in and provide £143 million ($193 million) in funding for an MFS property portfolio. This allowed Barclays to be repaid approximately the same amount it had previously lent.
Barclays has also alleged that MFS funds were "fraudulently circulated" among a network of associated companies "on a massive scale." A company linked to Paresh Raja, MFS's founder, reportedly received £235 million ($317 million) in bridge loans from an entity backed by Banco Santander SA. Creditors are actively working to locate missing funds as part of the insolvency proceedings.
