US stock markets experienced a strong rally, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbing 1.32% or 693.38 points to a record high of 53,178.41. The S&P 500 gained 1.48% or 110.78 points, closing at 7,600.50, just shy of its all-time closing high. The Nasdaq Composite surged 2.13% or 540.04 points to 25,913.90. This surge was primarily fueled by hopes for a resolution to US-Iran tensions, specifically regarding the Strait of Hormuz, which led to a significant drop in crude oil prices.

Crude oil prices, particularly Brent crude, fell about 5% to $83.77 a barrel after President Donald Trump indicated that talks with Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would occur, though Iran later disputed the planning of such talks. This decline in oil prices was a key factor in alleviating Wall Street's concerns about rising inflation, and it also contributed to lower US Treasury yields, with the 10-year Treasury yield sinking to 4.68% from 4.75%.

The market's performance was also bolstered by robust second-quarter earnings reports. Earnings per share for S&P 500 companies are projected to be 47% higher than a year ago, with 85.2% of reporting companies exceeding analyst expectations. Communication services stocks were top performers, climbing 4.3%, with Amazon shares advancing 4.6%. Energy stocks, however, were the worst performers, dropping 1.2% due to falling oil prices. Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Wealth, emphasized the importance of oil prices and bond yields, stating, "Every day, everybody wakes up and looks at the price of a barrel of oil and the yield on the 10-year, and if that’s going lower, the market’s OK, and if it’s going higher the market’s not good whatsoever."

The easing of Middle East tensions and the resulting drop in oil prices provided a significant boost to sectors sensitive to fuel costs, such as airlines and cruise lines. United Airlines rose 5.8%, American Airlines climbed 5%, and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings increased by 6.6%. The S&P 500 is now just 0.1% below its previous record set earlier this summer, following a volatile July marked by fluctuating oil prices.
