New York City has seen a substantial rise in anti-Jewish hate crimes in 2026. Through the first seven months of the year, there were 205 confirmed anti-Jewish hate crimes, an 8.5% increase from 189 during the same period in 2025. These incidents accounted for 56.9% of all 360 confirmed hate crimes citywide, which itself represents a 9.4% increase over the 329 reported in the first seven months of 2025. This surge in anti-Jewish incidents occurs even as overall major crime categories have reportedly declined.
Specifically, July 2026 saw a sharp increase in anti-Jewish hate crimes. Out of 33 confirmed hate crimes reported in July, 23 targeted Jews, representing nearly 70% of the total. This marks a 53.3% increase in anti-Jewish hate crimes compared to July 2025, when 15 such incidents were recorded. Despite Jews making up approximately 10% of New York City's population, they were the target of a disproportionately high number of hate crimes.
The reporting of hate crime statistics has also seen changes under Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration, which began in January 2026. After an initial 182% increase in anti-Jewish hate crimes in January, the city began publishing only "confirmed" hate crimes rather than "reported" ones, making direct comparisons to previous years challenging. However, current data indicates a consistent trend of anti-Jewish incidents forming the majority of hate crimes, with experts noting that many incidents likely go unreported to police. Anti-Muslim hate crimes also increased by 62.5% in the first seven months of 2026, though from a smaller base of 16 incidents in 2025 to 26 in 2026.
