Daimler Truck is establishing "Daimler Truck Defence" as a new global brand to consolidate its defense activities and aims to achieve €1 billion in defense-related revenue by 2028. This move is supported by a planned investment of a mid-three-digit million-euro amount over the coming years, targeting expansion in engineering, manufacturing, sales, and service capabilities. The company, which currently employs about 1,000 people in its defense business, sees this sector as a crucial growth pillar.

Karin Rådström, CEO of Daimler Truck, highlighted that targeted investments will be made in production facilities and the development of new solutions, leveraging the company's global strengths. CFO Eva Scherer also noted that Daimler Truck is well-positioned for defense growth, given its ability to scale production quickly. The strategy involves integrating military variants into existing production lines at plants like Wörth am Rhein, Germany, and Molsheim, France, and expanding the product portfolio beyond Mercedes-Benz Trucks to include other global Daimler Truck brands.

Recent contract awards underscore this strategic focus, including a significant order from the German Bundeswehr, a contract with the Canadian Armed Forces for at least 1,500 logistics trucks, and a framework agreement with the French Armed Forces for 7,000 Zetros platform-based trucks. Dennis Kinzelmann, CEO of Daimler Truck Defence, emphasized the growing global demand for reliable military mobility and the company's ability to deliver solutions at scale due to its global manufacturing network and resilient supply chains. The company also offers local assembly of militarized Mercedes-Benz trucks in customer countries.

The global increase in defense spending, driven by events like the war in Ukraine, is creating a favorable environment for companies like Daimler Truck. While some analysts warn of potential bottlenecks in European supply chains and inflationary pressures if production doesn't keep pace with demand, Daimler Truck believes its commercial vehicle production expertise provides an advantage in scaling up quickly. The company's expansion into defense is part of a broader trend where governments, including Germany and France, are looking to bolster their militaries and use defense spending as an industrial strategy to revitalize manufacturing and secure supply chains.
