Danone is currently embroiled in a legal battle with Chobani, its primary competitor in the high-protein yogurt market. Danone has accused Chobani of inflating protein claims on its multi-serving tubs of Chobani 20G Protein, which Danone considers a direct rival to its Oikos Pro product. This lawsuit, filed in a Manhattan federal court, is the latest in a series of legal challenges Danone has brought against Chobani since 2016, including a recent cold-brew coffee lawsuit that Chobani failed to get dismissed.

The competition is intensifying as consumers increasingly seek protein-rich products, partly driven by the rise of GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, which boost demand for foods like yogurt to combat muscle wastage. Chobani's U.S. market share has grown to 26% from 21% three years ago, while Danone's has slipped to 25.8% from 30.7% in the same period. Analysts from Barclays note that Chobani is growing at over 20%, while Danone's dairy unit saw 3% like-for-like sales growth in the Americas in the first quarter of this year.

Danone's struggles to meet the high demand for protein yogurts have been highlighted by analysts, who express concern about the perceived lack of urgency in the recovery of Danone's U.S. dairy business. Chobani's CEO, Hamdi Ulukaya, has dismissed Danone's allegations, suggesting that the lawsuits are an attempt to create negative headlines for his privately held company. A former Chobani executive, Brad Charron, even suggested Danone's actions imply, "If you can't compete with them, sue them."

Beyond the yogurt wars, the coffee industry is experiencing significant price increases. Coffee prices in the U.S. were up 18.3% in January compared to the previous year, and have risen 47% over five years. This surge has led some consumers, like Liz Sweeney, to reduce or even eliminate their coffee consumption, opting to cut down on cafe visits and limit their daily intake. Chobani has also ventured into the coffee market through its acquisition of La Colombe, leading to another legal dispute with Danone over coffee-related branding.
