Iron ore futures have hit their lowest point in over a year, with prices slumping below $100 and the most-traded September iron ore contract on the Dalian Commodity Exchange falling 3.31% to 715 yuan (approximately $105.8) per ton. This downturn reflects a bearish sentiment fueled by softening fundamentals and abundant supplies. The decline has been ongoing, extending a losing streak to a fifth consecutive trading day by July 30th.
The market is facing a significant supply-demand imbalance. According to SMM data, global iron ore shipments, while slightly down week-over-week, saw China's port arrivals surge by 54% week-over-week to 30.32 million metric tons, indicating increased supply pressure as weather disruptions outside China receded. This surge, coupled with a buildup in port inventories—totaling 106.92 million metric tons at ten tracked ports as of July 30th, up 1.29 million metric tons week-over-week—further confirms a pattern of strong supply and weak demand.
Demand for iron ore remains subdued, primarily due to weak downstream steel production. Chinese steel mills are experiencing financial losses, with average losses at steel mills in Tangshan exceeding $100 per ton, and hot metal production continues to decline. The operating rate of blast furnaces at 242 steel mills stood at 88.93% on July 29th, a 0.47 percentage point decrease week-over-week, with daily hot metal output dropping by 16,000 metric tons. This reduction is attributed to environmental inspections and the traditional summer off-season.
Major miners like MinRes, Rio Tinto, and Vale have reported high production and sales, further cementing the ample supply outlook. MinRes, for example, reported a 42% year-over-year increase in iron ore production at its Onslow Iron project in Q2 2026, reaching 8.754 million metric tons, and shipments surged 66% year-over-year to 9.596 million metric tons. With no significant positive macro or fundamental news anticipated, the oversupplied market is expected to keep iron ore prices subdued in the short term, with analysts anticipating continued consolidation and limited upside momentum.
